Love. Be Good. Be Human. Make. Share. These are ideals for everyone to follow and are the personal philosophies of Austin, Texas-based artist Jonathan Windham. Artmuse.com is excited to support Windham to achieve his goals.
We are all likely aware of the April 20, 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. When it exploded, so did all the news outlets, blogs, radio shows with 24-hour updates on the seemingly never-ending leak. The underwater camera that fed us perpetual video of the actual leak itself bore witness to the tragic reality of what was next for all of the fragile marine life, shorelines, and livelihoods affected by this explosion.
We all watched and wondered: "What can I do?" and "How can I help?" Windham tried to lend a hand, but the red tape and slow-paced responses made it too difficult for the average Joe/Jane to lend a hand.
What's an artist to do? Well, he gets up and does what he does best — he makes art and shares it.
Windham contacted art-for-all evangelist Bonnie Glendinning, founder and curator of Artmuse.com. His limited edition print series, Eyes, were already on exhibit on Artmuse.com, but Windham had the great idea to add a special edition — his Hawksbill Sea Turtle.
Eyes is a series consisting of scratchboard drawings of animal eyes. More specifically, these are the eyes of endangered species. Windham's got an agenda and a plan when it comes to loving, being good, being human, making, and sharing. As a passionate advocate for animal rights, his art functions as his way to both inform his collectors and support the greater good. For every print sold from Eyes on artmuse.com, 50% of his proceeds go to a well-researched charity or nonprofit organization that benefits the specific animal depicted. Windham carefully chooses which group he partners with, researching each one himself to make sure that they are well-run and transparent advocacy groups.
In the chaos and frustration of the Gulf oil tragedy Windham had an epiphany. He decided to include Hawksbill Sea Turtle in his Artmuse.com showcase. This time though, he's going all out. He decided to generously donate 100% of all of his proceeds from the sale of Hawksbill Sea Turtle directly to Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC). That's right. You read it correctly. 100%!!
Artmuse.com and Windham have an immediate goal to reach $700 in 7 days, starting August 26, 2010. Really, we want to reach double this! Starting at only $25 for beautiful, archival prints, either loose or framed prints, this important goal to help alleviate an urgent situation could easily be achieved with the help of the larger art and collector community.
Artmuse.com has great respect for NOAH Nature Alliance, which is a non-profit that connects other non-profits with a supportive donor community with worthy nature, wildlife conservation, and community betterment causes — worldwide. They rock and we love them. The folks at NOAH are good people helping other good people who help nature. Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) is another group full of good people, and also one of NOAH's partners. Here at Artmuse.com, we like good people, we like nature, thusly, we love NOAH and STC. We are incredibly excited to partner with Windham, NOAH, and STC to bring art, nature, and the greater good together.
This fundraiser print is a great example about how artists can use their art to not only be a part of the community, but engage humanity as a whole, thereby helping to make a difference in the world. Excellent. Just excellent!
With every purchase of Hawksbill Sea Turtle on artmuse.com, you get a beautiful archival print, plus you'll be making a direct contribution to the recovery of the Gulf Coast. Tell your friends, your family, and go ahead and tell your enemies. This is art making a real difference and every art lover can participate!
Remember: Love. Be Good. Be Human. Make. Share. You don't have to be an artist to understand these simple concepts. You don't even have to be an artist to fulfill these ideals. Together, Jon Windham, Artmuse.com, NOAH, STC, and yes, YOU can make a difference to this world that we share with all creatures great and small.
