Recently, I made a trip to Miami with my husband where we explored the art scene in the Miami Design District. Whether looking for fine art, high-end modern furniture or interesting lighting for your home, the Miami Design District will have something for you. My first introduction to this neighborhood was on a long layover when a friend picked us up from the airport and took us to Michael's Genuine Food. An amazing restaurant set up in the middle of the Design District and whose aesthetics clearly match the level of craftsmanship in the Design District. On our drive in, I took note of the storefronts and mentally bookmarked a few places I wanted to check on on my return visit.
On my return trip to Miami, we started off at Casa furnishings, a modern furniture showroom on the corner of N.E. 1st Ave & N.E 39th St. The dining tables and chaise lounges are works of art in their own right. Art doesn't necessarily need to come in the form of a canvas and Casa's sculptural chairs proves that you can find art in unexpected places.
We continued on 1st Ave and stopped in the Ricart Gallery, which prominently featured paintings by a Miles Davis. Vibrant and rich, this small gallery was full of life. The gentleman who greeted us was friendly and welcoming and encouraged to go upstairs to take a look at some photography.
We also popped into Luxe because I'm a sucker for a funky light fixture. Its a simple way to bring some design into your home. Luxe offers a variety of modern pendant lights and funky chandeliers. We window shopped Etra Fine Art, Art Fusion Gallery and European Art Gallery. Along our walk, we stopped at the Orange Cafe and gallery, where you can continue to eye art while sipping on a cup of coffee.
And for those of you with little artists-in-training, I suggest stopping in Genius Jones. A children's store with Keith Haring coloring books and Built NY Diaper Bags (they make more than just wine bags!). Get those kids creating at an early age!
There are over 130 storefronts to check out in the neighborhood—plenty to keep you entertained. I suggest checking out Art + Design Night held the 2nd Saturday of each month from 7-10 pm, when the galleries and showroom open their doors and offer refreshments and music. Happy Exploring!
