Linda Dumont discovered her passion for art early in her life. As a child she made visits to the studio of her great uncle, Joseph Margulies, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and New York. A distinguished portrait and landscape painter, her great uncle received many commissions for his acclaimed portraits, and also painted scenes of Central Park along with other landmarks of New York City. Joseph was a tremendous influence on Linda. Linda's natural artistic talents have provided her a vast and diverse 30 year career in the arts—from dance and ballet to painting.
Gaining artistic experience in ice-skating while growing up in Philadelphia, “I danced for five years on ice, then moved on to ballet, which turned into a love for ballet through high school”. At that time Linda received a scholarship to Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colorado, with a minor in fine arts. From there she went on to Moors College of Art to pursue fashion design, only to realize that drawing and painting was her first love. Linda then attended the Boston Museum School for the following four years, and studied all the fine arts with a major in painting, while also doing figure sculpture.
Out of her love for the human figure, Linda’s first subjects were figures. Her vibrant paintings have evolved into other subjects over her long career, and now she says, her favorite inspiration is the ocean. Her paintings, whether a city scape or abstract, express her sense movement with her dance-like strokes. It is clear to see her admiration and influence of Helen Frankenthaler and abstract expressionism.
Linda says her motivation is for herself alone and an "expression to feed my soul”. Her time alone is her "most favorite thing about working as an artist.” The audience is not her motivation, allowing her to play by her own rules. “Only later did I start to listen to others, once I started commission work and working with other’s direction.” Even if she is working with other people’s direction, Linda always follows her gut instincts, producing visually exciting, abundantly colorful, and truly unique works of art.
When asked what she would be if she was not an artist, Linda says “if I did not paint I would want to do some other form of artistic expression.” As an art collector herself, Linda believes that art is valuable and should be available for everyone. “Some art should be affordable”, but that “paying money for it puts a value on the art, thereby, showing respect for the art.”
Currently, Linda is working on a scene of downtown Austin, and several large paintings for Texas State University. Linda’s paintings can be seen at a number of places in Austin, Texas and is in private collections around the world.
