Mostly a self-taught artist, Natasha Newton can’t remember a time when she didn’t draw or paint, art has interested her throughout her life. “I took some art classes at school, but I didn’t go to art college”. She considered it in her mid-twenties, but by that time her art career started to gain momentum. “Becoming a good artist is really about having the desire to create art in the first place, great ideas, and then the determination to just practice, practice, practice!” For Natasha, this eventually led her into finding her own unique style. “I feel I’m always learning, it’s a real journey.”
When she first became an exhibiting artist, Natasha was almost exclusively painting still-life/object watercolor pieces, and began painting landscapes in 2004. “By that time, I’d made the decision to switch from watercolor to acrylics after winning an award for my work at a show in London. My prize was £500 from Winsor & Newton to spend on art materials, and I decided to try acrylics for the first time and absolutely loved them!” She found the acrylics completely suited her way of working, and feels that from that moment on, her work really evolved. “I now paint landscapes, forests, birds, even portraits! I feel far more confident about trying new subjects and ideas than I ever did in the past.”
Natasha feels that never being “100% satisfied with anything regardless of how well a piece turns out” is what motivates her to keep going and improve her skill. “I’m always excited to see how the work will evolve and I’m constantly inspired by new things.” Among the places she finds inspiration are: the internet, her dreams, books, music, her imagination, the Suffolk coast and countryside, and the Tate Galleries in London.
Currently, she is working on a couple of commissioned paintings, including a large piece for a United States Senator who collects her work, and a few new pieces for her exhibits. “I also have two shows coming up next year so I’ll be starting on the work for those very soon. The first is a solo show in the UK from July 30th - August 5th with music/sound installation by the American composer Leon Milo, and the second is a joint show on the island of Sylt, Northern Germany, in the autumn of 2010.”
Natasha enjoys collecting art almost as much as she enjoys creating it, owning several original pieces by various artists. “I buy art primarily because I love to surround myself with beautiful and inspiring pieces, but also because it’s possibly a good investment for the future, I live in the hope that I may have spotted the next Picasso!” It’s also very important to her that art is affordable, because not everyone can afford an original piece. “I feel very strongly that art enhances everyone’s life; it shouldn’t be elitist. If we make art available to all, it can only be a good thing.”
It thrills Natasha when “someone tells me that I’ve changed the way they see the world, that they’re now looking at things with fresh eyes. This has happened a few times in my career and it’s one of the biggest compliments an artist can get.” Her favorite thing about being an artist is “everything!” “Doing a job I love and getting paid for it, being my own boss, making other people happy through my work, meeting interesting people, always feeling excited about the opportunities tomorrow may bring, and being surrounded by beauty and inspiration every day, I’m very lucky.”
